Do the symbols of astrology and tarot card readings reflect something ‘objective’ about ourselves and the world? This is an interesting philosophical question, one that may even be amenable to scientific inquiry, but when it comes to the value of symbolic consultation, it doesn’t matter whether one subscribes to a worldview that would affirm the ontological reality of astrology and tarot. For our purposes, the more important question is: do they work? In my experience, the answer is yes. Humans are symbolic creatures; it’s what distinguishes us from other animals and forms the basis of our language, communal life, and self-understanding. Narrative—the stories we tell about ourselves and our species more broadly—is at the heart of this. Whether or not the universe is meaningfully patterned, astrology and tarot can have psychological benefit as aids for self reflection, creative agency, and appreciation for difference in relationship.
